Computer as an aid to Dissertation Writers

Most students find that the best way of drafting their dissertation is to write it straight on to a computer. The nature of research also defines in what manner to write and certain computer programs can help researcher to do the task accurately. Dissertation Writers can use online resources to write their dissertation accurately. Besides making the task of drafting and re-sequencing sections of your dissertation easier, word processing software has a range of proofing tools which can be useful, especially for students whose first language is not English. These include spelling checkers, thesaurus and grammar checkers. A word of caution is appropriate here, however.

Ø  Spelling checkers: Beware of trusting spelling checkers too much. Remember that they will only find spelling mistakes which are not real words. They will not pick up words which are incorrect but happen to be real English words (for example, if you type ‘food’ instead of ‘foot’, ‘students’ instead of ‘student’, ‘tow’ instead of ‘two’, or ‘fro’ instead of ‘for’). You must, therefore, still proofread your text manually after running your spelling checker. It is often best to have someone else do this that is less familiar with the text than you are, as they are more likely to spot mistakes.

Ø  Thesauruses: Now a day’s word processing packages have a thesaurus tab which offers suggestions of alternative words or synonyms to help reduce repetition. This can be helpful, but only if you know the words that are suggested and can judge which choices are appropriate in the context.

Ø  Grammar checkers: Some word processing packages also include grammar checkers. However, these are not yet sufficiently developed to be of any great use in serious writing: too often they suggest changes which are inappropriate in the context. They are best avoided.
